time measurement:seasons

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Number of seasons distinguished by early civilizations *number
of seasons* *region*
2 Babylon, early Greece
3 Egypt, Assyria
4 Greece, Rome, Anatolia
6 India
24 China^*

^* : The 24 "seasons" of the Chinese calendar were defined as
meteorological points of the year and required advanced mathematics to
keep them in place relative to the true seasons.

Cultural and geographical bias can be particularly deep-seated when it
comes to the appreciation of seasons as natural phenomena. The United
Nations make every effort to avoid bias, but in 1993 the /ims
Newsletter/ (International Marine Science Newsletter), which is
published quarterly in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and
Spanish by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO), came out in a spring, summer, autumn and winter
edition.

When I pointed out that in South Australia I received the winter edition
in the middle of summer, UNESCO changed its Newsletter edtions to 1st,
2nd, 3rd and 4th quarter of the year. This refers to the Gregorian
calendar and can be interpreted as bias against other calendars. But the
Gregorian calendar has become a world-wide standard for good scientific
reasons, and its use by UNESCO can be justified on that basis.
